This captivating jug pays homage to one of China’s most beloved ceramic traditions: Tang dynasty sancai, or “three-color” ware. Originating centuries ago, sancai glazes were prized for their flowing, molten quality—earthy tones of amber, green, and cream cascading over sculpted forms like liquid light.
Here, that spirit lives on in a vintage vessel found in Shanxi province. The jug’s generous, rounded body and prominent handle create a strong silhouette, while raised decorative elements catch and break the glaze into rivulets and pools. Brown, green, and off-white tones mingle and drip, leaving behind a landscape of texture that rewards close looking from every angle.
Though rooted in history, the piece feels surprisingly at home in contemporary interiors. Use it as a sculptural accent on a shelf or console, or add a glass insert and transform it into a unique planter for a trailing plant. Its rich, organic surface pairs beautifully with linen, wood, and stone, adding depth and a subtle note of color to neutral rooms.
