This extraordinary cabinet began its life far from the quiet of a modern living room. In the highlands of Tibet, it was used as a rice separator—an indispensable piece of household furniture that also served as a canvas for devotional art.
Across the front, hand-painted dragons coil and unfurl amid clouds and stylized flowers, their bodies alive with movement and color. These mythical guardians were believed to offer protection and good fortune, watching over both the harvest and the home. Softened by age, the original pigments now glow with a muted richness: reds, greens, blues, and golds that feel both timeworn and opulent.
Raised on four sturdy legs with a detachable top, this substantial piece has the presence of an altar and the scale of a small sideboard. Whether placed in an entry hall, dining room, or great room, it instantly becomes the focal point—an heirloom object that invites questions and close study.
Style it with a simple arrangement of candles, a single large vessel, or a rotating display of your own collected objects. With a piece this powerful, a light hand is all that’s needed.
