This monumental black and gold Coromandel screen is a showpiece of Chinese decorative art, likely dating to the mid-20th century and inspired by the grand lacquer screens of the Qing Dynasty. Composed of ten towering panels, each 8 feet high, it reads like an architectural mural—instantly transforming any wall or open space.
The polished black lacquer ground provides a dramatic backdrop for hand-painted narrative scenes in gold and sepia, depicting classical Chinese figures, landscapes, and courtly life. The reverse side is also decorated with a simpler, complementary design, making the screen as beautiful from behind as it is from the front.
At nearly 16 feet in total length, this screen can be used fully extended as a breathtaking wall mural or partially folded to define space in a large room. It’s a singular statement piece for Maximalist, Traditional, Hollywood Regency, and high-end Transitional interiors—equally at home in a grand entry, dining room, or living room.
With wear and imperfections consistent with age and use, the screen carries the depth and patina that only time can create, enhancing its character, authenticity, and collectible value.
