In Daoist lore, Zhang Guolao is associated with unconventional wisdom, longevity, and the ability to move effortlessly between worlds. His donkey, often said to fold up into paper when not in use, adds a touch of playfulness to the myth. Here, these stories are translated into warm wood: the grain of the boxwood, the folds of the robe, the lines of the animal all inviting close, appreciative viewing.
The modest size and natural material make this statue especially adaptable. It can live on a Buddha table or Daoist altar, sit on a bookshelf among favorite texts, or occupy a corner of a desk as a quiet companion during work and study. In a Japandi or wabi-sabi interior, the aged boxwood adds organic texture and a sense of narrative without visual noise.

Placement & care
Display on a stable surface—shelf, console, altar, or desk—where the side profile can be appreciated. Over time, handling will naturally deepen the patina and character of the boxwood.
