Hand-Painted Black Lacquer Relief Folding Screen – 4-Panel Flower & Bird Room Divider

For over two millennia across Chinese imperial palaces and aristocratic estates, the folding screen (Pingfeng, literally "windbreak") served as far more than an architectural partition. Placed behind the master's seat or just inside the entrance hall, it directed the auspicious flow of Qi, shielded private chambers from direct view, and functioned as a monumental multi-panel canvas celebrating harmony with nature.

This Custom Black Relief Flower & Bird Lacquer Folding Screen revives that regal court tradition. Across four hinged vertical panels, skilled artisans build up raised sculptural relief (Fudiao) before painstakingly hand-painting each blossom, branch, and songbird in luminous mineral tones. Set against a profound, midnight-black lacquer background, the colorful foliage and spirited birds appear to step forward into the room—offering a rich tactile dimension that catches ambient lamplight and daylight from every angle.

In traditional Huaniao (flower and bird) symbolism, flourishing blossoms and paired songbirds invoke enduring prosperity, seasonal renewal, and domestic harmony. Because the four panels are joined by smooth, reversible hinges, you can effortlessly adjust the angle and footprint of the screen to suit your layout:

• Position it in a grand entryway or foyer as an auspicious privacy baffle facing the front door.
• Stand it in an open-concept living and dining room to separate lounging zones from dining or workspace areas.
• Unfold it behind a master bed, sofa, or tea table as an architectural backdrop.

Available in multiple grand heights (180 cm or 200 cm tall) and panel widths (45 cm, 50 cm, or 60 cm per panel across 4 panels), this custom-crafted lacquer screen bridges heritage craftsmanship with modern spatial versatility.
